Electric System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) in Minutes

Fort Collins Light & Power reliability in one sentence:    On average, a customer in Fort Collins can expect a 62 minute outage about every 5.5 years. SAIDI is how long, on average, each customer was without power in the last year.

  • The 21Q2 SAIDI value of 14.63 minutes increased from 11.38  minutes in the prior quarter.
  • Taking into context SAIDI, CAIDI and SAIFI, 21Q2 reliability showed an overall reduction with a small decrease in duration for those customers who experienced an outage, but an overall increase of SAIDI as a result of an increase in frequency of outages.
  • The largest increases in frequency (by customer-hours out) are primarily a function of equipment failures and dig-in outages that occurred in the 12-month period ending 21Q2. Equipment failures normally increase during the spring and summer months, and the dig-in failures are occurring as a result of an increase of excavation and directional drilling as part of the broadband deployment.

  • The average outage duration decreased from 61.73 minutes  to 59.64 minutes.
  • Taking into context SAIDI, CAIDI and SAIFI, 21Q2 reliability showed an overall reduction with a small decrease in duration for those customers who experienced an outage, but the increase in frequency of outages overall resulted in a reduction in reliability.

Electric System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI)

How many times per year the average customer experiences a power outage. 

  • SAIFI increased slightly in 21Q2 to 0.25 outages per year from the 21Q1 number of 0.18 outages per year.
  • The increase in frequency is primarily medium due to medium voltage equipment failures that show a seasonal increase as weather warms up for the spring and summer. 
  • This year, the number of outages is also showing an increase in failures of mostly low voltage cables that may have been cut into by Connexion fiber optic cable installation. 
  • 75 dig-in outages have occurred in the last 12 months, approximately 47% of the 157 dig-in failures that have occurred over the last 5 years. (That percentage is up 3% from last quarter.)
