Analysis of Performance

Fort Collins Light & Power reliability in one sentence: On average, a customer in Fort Collins can expect a 11.24-minute outage every year.

SAIDI is how long, on average, each customer was without power in the last year.

The 24Q3 SAIDI value decreased to 11.24 minutes from 12.66 minutes compared to the 12-month measurement period for 24Q2.

Taken into context SAIFI, SAIDI, and CAIDI 24Q3 reliability showed a similar frequency of outages (86 outages versus last quarter's 99), and a decrease of 1,831 overall customer outage hours (14,936 hours versus last quarter’s 16,767 hours) for the 12-month measurement period for Q3. For those customers who experienced an outage, the average outage time decreased from 65.36 minutes to 46.75 minutes.

The reduction in customer hours for outages is consistent with the transition from Summer to Fall months, with 24 primary cable failures, one 200-amp Multi-Position Junction, four 200-amp elbow failures, one transformer, and one transformer pad, with the remaining outage hours all being associated with secondary service connections and cable.

Primary Failures are more caused by wetter seasons with moisture egress due to freeze thaw cycles.  The slight decrease could be a result of a drier season.

Metric Definition
The electric distribution System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) is a description of the length of time all customers would have been out of power if the total number of hours out of service over the last 12 months were to be shared, and it is typically measured in minutes. The number of outages as well as the time between the start of an outage and the restoration of electric service have a bearing on this number.
Why Is This Important?
SAIDI provides our customers with a sense of how well Fort Collins Utilities responds to outages.  Because SAIDI is an industry standard measure, it allows current and perspective customers to compare our quality of service to other communities.
City Organization Impact on Performance
High – Reliable electric service depends on quality installation and maintenance of utility infrastructure to avoid service interruptions and sufficient resources to respond quickly to outages as they occur.  Fort Collins Light and Power is directly responsible for both of these tasks.
Benchmark Information
This metric contains regional and national benchmark data that compares the City's performance to other public utilities. The regional benchmark accounts for local factors that impact performance on this metric; the national benchmark compares Fort Collins' performance to national "best practices."
